Hotel california is a song about a man that visits a deserted paradise. He said that most likely because he is referring to how deserted the place is.

@auroratwins012 spirit can also mean a strong alcoholic beverage (so strictly speaking wine isn't even a spirit, but it works for the song ofc)

@auroratwins012 I just looked it up and it does have a double meaning in the song.
1969 was an important year in American music because of the famous Woodstock Festival. what the singer probably means is that after this year the music industry lost it's "human spirit" and became too obsessed with making money.
But the literal meaning would be "we havent had wine since 1969"

@hochochoc hmm i'm still confused. so it means fuguratively " they lost the human spirit" and "they haven't had wine since 1969" as a literal meaning? What does wine have to do with the human spirit?

@auroratwins012 yeah it can mean both in different contexts. the reason alcoholic drinks are called "spirits" is: when you make alcohol (distilling it) vapor is created and during the middle ages people thought that that's a spirit (ghost) ^^

the term spirit is sometimes used to mean an alcoholic beverage. the reason that it came to mean that is because if you drink alcohol it puts you in a good mood
