The Origins of Titanium

Discovered in Great Britain in 1791, Titanium was named after the Titans of Greek mythology. The element is most commonly used as a compound to form metal. Titanium can be alloyed with iron, aluminum, vanadium, and molybdenum, among other elements, to produce strong, lightweight alloys. As a metal, titanium is recognized for its high strength-to-weight ratio. It is a strong metal with low density that is very ductile. Put simply, it’s very strong, very light, and can withstand substantial stress before it breaks. This is the primary reason it is used in many aerospace applications.

The Lockheed A-12 and its development of the SR-71 “Blackbird” were two of the first aircraft frames where titanium was used. These aircraft were Mach 3+ reconnaissance aircraft built for the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The use of titanium in these aircraft paved the way for much wider use in modern military and commercial aircraft. Many Boeing aircraft and Airbus aircraft use titanium throughout their structure.
