Athens
Athens (Athina) is named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom, who, according to legend, won the city after defeating Poseidon in a duel. The goddess victory was celebrated by the construction of a temple on the Acropolis, the site of the citys earliest settlement in Attica.
The most important site of interest in Athens is the Parthenon on the Acropolis. This structure dominates the area of central Athens. From the midst of modern Athens rises the Acropolis and sitting prominently atop lies the Acropolis. A popular stop for many is the Chapel of St George which is located atop Lycabettus Hill in central Athens. The views of the city of Athens from the top are excellent. On a clear day one might even see some of the nearby islands. If you are interested in shopping, Athens has a bit to offer. It is possible to buy the latest fashion designs from European designers to local items made by local designers. If one street stands out for shopping it would have to be Ermou.
Athens enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with the greatest amounts of precipitation mainly occurring from mid-October to mid-April. Snowfalls occur almost on a yearly basis, though these do not normally lead to significant, if any, disruption. Spring and fall (autumn) are considered ideal seasons for sightseeing and all kinds of outdoor activities. Summers can be particularly hot and at times prone to smog and pollution related conditions.
Athens is home to 148 theatrical stages, more than any other European city, including the famous ancient Herodes Atticus Theater, home to the Athens Festival, which runs from May to October each year.
